Influence of rigid inclusions on the mechanical behavior of compacted residual soils

Resumo
Presence of rigid inclusions in soil matrix can control soil behavior and under certain circumstances can be considered as a limiting factor for several engineering applications. Generally, different properties of inclusions are responsible of the emergent macroscopic behavior of soil-inclusions mixtures. Among them, the most important are the soil matrix geotechnical properties, heterogeneity and size distribution of inclusions, relationship between soil to inclusions stiffness, and volume ratio and orientation of inclusion within the soils matrix. The purpose of this article is to evaluate how rigid inclusions affect mechanical behavior of residual soil. The small-strain shear stiffness of different soil-inclusion mixtures are measured in an oedometric with bender element mounted in both caps. The PZT piezoceramic crystals were inserted in porous disc of an edometer of (63mm diameter and 35 mm high). Through a function generator (Rigol DG1002) creates the excitation signal of 10 V peak to peak of 1 kHz frequency of parameter Rd=8 according to (Sánchez-Salinero 1985). Receiver signal is amplified by filter amplifier (Standford Research System). The signals were digitized by an oscilloscope (Rigol DS432), for removing noise signals they were averaged 256 times. Compacted soils used in this research come from Oberá Department in Misiones Province is in the North of Argentine (latitude 27°29′00″S and longitude 55°08′00″O) (Figure 1). The climate is subtropical without dry season, annual mean highest and lowest temperature are 26.5ºC and 16.0ºC, respectively and mean precipitations are close to 2300 mm/year. These conditions, abundant subtropical rainforest and the relative flat topography favor the weathering of rock and formation of residual soils.
