Development of a low cost motion capture system destined for the determination of human's kinematics

Resumo

The motion capture is a main tool for quantitative motion analyses. Since the XIX century, several motion caption systems have been developed for biomechanics study, animations, games and movies. A precise human motion analysis requires knowledge from distinct fields. It is necessary then the use of didactics tools and methods for research and teaching for learning aid. The devices for analysis and motion capture currently that are found on the market and on educational institutes presents difficulties for didactical practice, which are the difficulty of transportation, high cost and limited freedom for the user towards the data acquisition. Therefore, the motion analysis is qualitatively performed, while quantitative performs requires highly complex laboratories. To counteract these problems, this work presents the development of a motion capture system for didactic use, hence a cheap, light, portable and handy device with a free software. This design includes the selection of the device, the software development for that and tests. The device was selected and two softwares were developed, each one in a different developing environment, one in the Microsoft Visual Studio C++¸ which is well integrated towards the hardware, another in Qt Creator, which offers a large number of programming tools for various visualizations. Both programs design aimed to have a handy graphical user interface to see and handle all the informations. The first program is responsible for the interaction with the hardware and recording the motion. The second program is responsible for process and represent the motion capture. The developed programs are able to use in classrooms for mathematical reproduction of motions and aids the dialogue between health field and engineering about kinesiology. The system requires the Microsoft Kinect hardware, a computer with Windows 7 or 8, and the proposed softwares.
