DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION AND EVALUATION OF A THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY METER BASED ON ASTM E1225 STANDARD

Resumo
The focus of this work is the design, construction and evaluation of a thermal conductivity meter apparatus based at ASTM E-1225 standards. The thermal conductivity is a heat transport propriety, and with the development of new materials becomes necessary the determination of thermophysical properties for its correct use. The apparatus was projected in CAD software and the materials selection was done following the standard recommendations. In its construction was used stainless steel 304 for meter bars, due its thermal conductivity be known. The heater was made with an aluminum cylinder and a thermal electric resistance and the cooling system was made with a peltier plate and a heat sink with fan. Lastly, used a steel pipe for created the guard cylinder. The first specimen tested was utilized stainless steel 304, the same material of meter bars, and used in this test an isothermal guard cylinder. The result of thermal conductivity showed an error of 6% relative the value found in literature. However in this test, the temperature of isothermal guard cylinder was lower that temperature required by the standard, having as future goals the development of a temperature control for the guard cylinder and realization of more test with different materials.
