The effects of chamfered and honed tool edge geometry in drilling process of SAE 4144M steel

Resumo
Cutting edge preparation, when properly carried out, increases the strength to the cutting edge of the tool and its useful life. The edge of the twist drill can be protected by rounding, chamfering or the combination of both. This paper analyzes the influence of edge protection by two different methods, honing and chamfer on a solid carbide twist drill in drilling of SAE 4144M steel used in injection pumps for diesel engines. The diameter of the bores, position deviation, roughness and roundness revealed significant differences in results. It was observed that the cutting edges of tools without protection undergo great cut pressures that lead to tool failure, significantly reducing its useful life when compared to those tools whose cutting edges are protected by honing or chamfer. Lower tool wear was observed in the twist drill protected by honing.
