PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF BIODIESEL OF SUNFLOWER AND SOYBEAN OILS

Resumo

The objective of this work was to produce soybean and sunflower biodiesel in laboratory using a transesterification reaction, and analyze the quality parameters of this biodiesel for its use in compression ignition engines. Currently, the known environmental benefits achieved with the use of biofuels is leading to a growth in participation of these fuels in energetic matrixes. The biodiesel is a fuel composed by mono-alkyl esters of long chain fatty acids derivative from vegetable oil or animal fat and possesses physical-chemical characteristics similar to diesel, and they can be perfectly mixed . The methodology employed was to measure the main physical-chemical properties: density, viscosity, cetane number, pour point, cloud point and flash point. The results obtained in this work shows the transenterification reaction resulted in a biofuel within the limits established by ANP, and it presents behavior similar to neat diesel proving its use viability. It can be concluded the detailed study allows us to compare the soybean and sunflower biodiesel with petroleum diesel. This study is fundamental to the performance review of a compression ignition engine.
