SMART SETUP - COMPUTATIONAL VISUAL SYSTEM TO REDUCE SETUP TIME IN CNC VERTICAL MACHINING CENTERS

Resumo
The demands of new and efficient products have required agility and competitive costs of the companies inserted in the different verticals of the industry. An important step to improve the efficiency of a factory is to reduce the wastes of time in its production processes. In this case, all activities that are time-consuming and do not add value to the final product are considered wastes. When a company starts producing different products using the same set of machines and tools, it usually needs to include in its production planning activities called setup activities. They are important to prepare the equipment to execute a service correctly, however, they do not add value to the final product, depending on the situation setup activities may occur several times in a single day inside a company. In operations involving CNC centers, defining the tridimensional point called part zero is one of the setup activities that an operator should complete before starting machining. It is also critical to the final result and could be very time-consuming. Current methods rely on operators' experience in such activities to achieve an expected result. Through the usage of computational visual, the current project aims to develop a device to contribute to the reduction of the waste of time inside a production line by the facilitation of the part zero point localization. Stereo vision techniques will allow the localization of the three-dimensional axis (X, Y and Z) of the part zero point simultaneously, which will accelerate the process. The image capturing system will analyze all captured images in order to find some reference points. Once this step is concluded, some calculations will be applied to determine the distances between the part zero point and the machine zero point. Finally, the operator will be able to start the machining of the part. It is hoped that this project will reduce the setup time of CNC centers with acceptable accuracy and at competitive costs.
