FE analysis of semicontinuous composite beams

Resumo

Composite beams have been widely used in buildings. Their structural behavior is often assumed as simply supported, either on steel columns or in other composite beams. Economic solutions, however, may be obtained by consideration of the composite beams as semicontinuous, which means there is a moment transfer between adjacent spans through the use of a proper composite connection. One of the main issues for the numerical simulation of semicontinuous beams is the determination of proper moment-rotation expressions for the two-sided connection. These expressions must incorporate with fidelity the stiffness, moment capacity and ductility of the connection. This work presents a Finite Element procedure for the nonlinear numerical analysis of semicontinuous composite beams. Nonlinear beam finite elements with partial interaction are combined with nonlinear springs in order to evaluate the effect of the incorporation of semicontinuous beams in composite structural design.
