Resumo

This paper presents a technical investigation that analyzes the cause of the fracture in some movement piston rods of the spillway floodgates of Tucuruí hydroelectric power plant. This investigation was divided into two parts: experimental and theoretical. Structural elements were monitored in a real service situation, with forces measured by strain gages. The results obtained in the experimental test were used in numerical solutions based on the Finite Element Method to check stress concentrations present in the notch of the piston rod, performing a fatigue analysis by the ε-N method of crack initiation and analyzing different semi-elliptical cracks to identify the approximate size that cause the rupture of the piston rod.
