Resumo

The urban agglomeration of the cities has consequently led to the construction of tall and slender buildings. These structures are subjected to horizontal dynamic forces, resulting in higher displacements. Among the devices used to avoid the undesirable effects caused by these displacements, the Tuned Liquid Dampers (TLDs) stand out by its low cost of operation. In Brazil, the water supply tanks are conceived on the top of buildings. So, the present article handles the potential use of these tanks as TLD. In order to verify its potential damping effect, the water tank is modeled associating models proposed by Housner (1963) and Yu (1997). The dynamic analysis of a building is made analytically and numerically. In the first analysis, the main goal is to verify if the water supply tank can efficiently reduce the horizontal displacements caused by seismic motion. In the numerical analysis, the objective is to reproduce the results obtained by the analytical analysis as well to verify the influence of the water tank eccentricity over these displacements caused by seismic motion. This last one analysis is executed in software based on the finite element method.
