Three-dimensional thermal analysis of structures in fire

Resumo

Structural materials such as reinforced concrete, steel, wood and aluminum, usually have their mechanical proprieties degraded when heated. In structural fire design, frequently it becomes necessary to carry out a thermal analysis in order to obtain the thermal field as a function of the fire exposure time. The thermal analysis is governed by the Poisson´s equation, which can be solved by the Finite Element Method. This paper shows the Finite Element formulation applied to the transient thermal analysis of three-dimensional structures. This formulation was employed in the development of the ATERM-3D software. The data input and the visualization of the results are carried out by means of the GiD software. The structure may be composed of any material and heating is provided by means of any curve temperature versus time. The ATERM-3D software is validated by comparison of numerical results with the ones obtained using SAFIR software for some examples. Concluding remarks and a few recommendations on thermal analysis are presented at the end.
