Comparison of Numerical Integration and Monte Carlo Simulation Methods for Structural Reliability based on the Failure Assessment Diagram

Resumo

The Failure Assessment Diagram (FAD) can be used for reliability assessment of crack-containing pressure vessels. In the FAD diagram there are two coordinates associated with collapse and fracture parameters. Realistically, such parameters are considered as random variables in order to account for uncertainties in crack sizes, applied stress and material properties [1]. In this paper, we use marginal distributions for representing the collapse and fracture parameters, and then evaluate the corresponding probability of failure of pressure vessels based on the FAD diagram. The objective of this procedure is to compare results of structural reliability using a numerical integral approach with ones of the Monte Carlo simulation method .
