Buckling and Vibration Analysis of Circular Hollow Section Members Using Generalised Beam Theory (GBT)

Resumo

This paper reports the results of an ongoing investigation on the use of Generalised Beam Theory (GBT) to analyse the vibration and buckling behaviours of cold-formed steel circular hollow section (CHS) members. Initially, results concerning the vibration behaviour of load-free steel CHS members are presented and discussed, thus providing a first glimpse of the potential of the GBT-based approach. Then, since it is common practice in literature to express the member static loading as a fraction of its critical buckling value, the buckling behaviour of CHS columns is also addressed. Finally, the vibration behaviour of axially compressed CHS members (columns) is investigated, focusing mainly on the effect of the load magnitude on the fundamental frequency and vibration mode nature. For validation purposes, some GBT results are compared with numerical values obtained from shell finite element analyses carried out in the code ANSYS.
