Experimental determination of the friction coefficient in bolted joints with different surface conditions

Resumo

Knowledge of effective slip strength is essential when a bolted joint is designed to work by friction. Axial load and friction coefficient are uncertain due to surface and bolt conditions. European standards indicate necessary tightening torque, but experimental torque-tension relationship is needed for many cases. Torque and axial load relaxation during time is also a common problem not so investigated. In this work, the friction coefficient and the effective slip strength are experimentally determined on a set of bolted joints operating on different surface conditions: prescriptions by standards demonstrate to be conservative not in all cases.
