Resumo

This article presents the description of a smart instrument for reading specification plates in medium voltage equipment of the distribution network of electric utilities. It is built using a compact wireless camera that can be fixed in any length hot stick that has a universal spline fitting, and a smartphone in the hands of the electrician. We assume the premise that conventional plates are being replaced with metal plates engraved or painted with QR code. The standard plates used so far undergo degradation with time, particularly given the high corrosion levels in coastal cities. Most probably, under similar conditions, the same deterioration should happen in plates with QR code. There are some standard redundancies as regard loss of information in the QR code graphic. However, the visual noise inserted by gradual corrosion of the plate is not well treated by conventional algorithms of the QR code. In this paper, we describe the prototype of the smart plate reader with the inclusion of a digital image processing technique capable of pre-processing images of severely damaged codes due to long exposition to outdoor weather conditions. The initial results in simulated conditions of images at different degradation stages are presented and compared. Preliminary results demonstrate to be very promising when it comes to the increase in reading robustness.
