Resumo
Cogeneration is widely applied in the sugar industry, the fuel used (bagasse) is a byproduct of the manufacture of sugar and ethanol process. The steam produced is used to drive steam turbines to produce electricity and mechanical energy and is also used for heating in the production process. However, this type of power generation is below the real potential. One of the ways to improve the process of cogeneration in the sugar industry is the use of biomass gasifiers associated with combined cycle, technology known as BIG-GTCC (biomass integrated gasifier - gas turbine combined cycle). This paper presents a thermodynamic study of the incorporation of BIG-GTCC technology in the sugar industry. A real plant data is referenced, the company has a traditional cycle and the proposed thermodynamic study is performed in two cases. . In the first case, air is used as the gasifier agent to produce a synthesis gas with a low calorific value (4 to 6 MJ/kg); in the second case steam/air mixture of 50% each are used, increasing the lower heat value to 8 MJ/kg. The main result is the increase of electricity production of the traditional cycle from 31,2 MW to 67,4 MW for the first case, and to 119,7 MW for the second.
