Fatigue crack growth behavior in the base metal 90° and 180° from the welded joint of an API 5L X-70 pipeline steel

Resumo

The aim of this paper is investigate how the UOE process may influence the fatigue crack growth (FCG) rates of an API 5L X70 PSL2, High Strength Low Alloy (HSLA) steel pipe. The fatigue crack growth rate test parameters and the geometry of the Compact Tension (CT) specimens were both in accordance to the ASTM E647 standard. Specimens had been machined from pipe samples taken from 90º and 180º of the longitudinal welded joint, and the Paris-Erdogan Law has been used to determine the fatigue crack growth parameters C and m for both, 90º and 180º positions. The results of the fatigue crack growth rate tests showed significant differences between regions situated 90º and 180º of the welded joint region, which can be potentially related to the steel pipe manufacturing process.
