Experimental study of fusion of PCM in spherical geometries

Resumo

The main objective of this study is to experimentally investigate the fusion process of PCM in spherical geometries subject to constant wall temperature and obtain experimental correlations for the time for complete fusion and the involved parameters of the process. These correlations are important for the discharge models development for PCM fixed bed storage. In the experimental treatment, four shell spheres 35, 76, 106 and 131 mm diameter were used, four initial temperatures ranging from -20°C to -5°C, and external wall temperature of 10°C, 18°C, 25°C. The PCM material was water and a mixture of water and polyethylene glycol in percentages ranging from 10% to 50%. The results show the variation of the complete fusion time with the spherical shell diameter, PCM, initial temperature of the PCM and the external surface temperature of the spherical shell.
