LIFE CYCLE ANALYSIS APPLIED TO THE UTILIZATION OF BIOMASS AND DIESEL FUELS FOR ELECTRICITY GENERATION

Resumo

Abstract: This work consists in the application of Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) to the aspects of electricity production, comparing negative and positive environment impacts of the use of different fuels in a generator group. The first analyzed fuel was diesel, which is fed to an internal combustion engine attached to a synchronous generator. The second fuel used was biomass (woody residues), which was gasified into poor biogas, also feeding the same combustion engine. In this case, the engine had undergone a conversion (ottolization), connected to a generator for the production of electricity. This information was introduced and processed by Simapro, a highly specialized software for LCA. The functional unit considered herein was the production of 100 kWh of electricity. With positive results for environmental impacts, woody biomass helped produce energy in a more sustainable way - 83 Kg (CO2), minimizing the greenhouse gas effects. The diesel fuel presented unsatisfactory results, emitting much more greenhouse gases 108 Kg (CO2) into the atmosphere and therefore contributing to climate change in a much more unsustainable manner.
