EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF DISPERSION OF TOLUENE ON NON-SATURATED PHASE OF THE SOIL - PART 1

Resumo

The leakage currents of hydrocarbons (gasoline, diesel, kerosene, naphtha) to soil have drawn attention in recent years because the spread of these cause soil contamination and can reach groundwater. Thus the transport mechanisms (advection, diffusion, adsorption, chemical and biological degradation and mass transfer between phases) should be investigated during propagation of these compounds in the soil. In this context, the research group investigates through experimental studies and mathematical modeling this propagation in the unsaturated and saturated areas of the soil. In this step we investigated the mechanism of transport by diffusion in the unsaturated zone of an artificial soil. The paper presents a discussion of modeling the propagation of compounds in the non-saturated soil (diffusion in the porous, adsorption, boundary conditions of the problem). The experimental data are obtained on a column filled with sandy soil in the laboratory scale. The compound Toluene is used as the representative of the gasoline. This paper presents two experiments and compared the dispersion of the compound toluene in the vapor phase and the influence of soil evaporation rate at the source.
