Cryogenic Treatment Effect in Steel Tool M2

Resumo

The study subject of this work is focused on the mechanical properties of steel tool M2, aiming to analyze what are the effects on this steel after being subjected of cryogenic treatment. The treatment quoted was realized subsequent the quenching and/or tempering, because this is just a complementary treatment which aims to improve the results of conventional treatments. The cryogenic treatment is realized in a chamber with controlled atmosphere of liquid nitrogen (-196° C). The steel was submerged into that chambre at low cooling rate (avoiding undesirable effects), until the temperature of -196° C, where the steel was kept around 24 hours. The heating of workpiece, until ambiente temperature, was realized in controlled temperature. After the treatment be performed was observed the variations suffered for the material. The aspects analyzed and compared were the hardness, lifetime and especially micro hardness. At the end of that analysis it was found that the tool's lifetime was increase due to their increased wear resistance, also confirmed that the hardness and microhardness showed a little increase, but this increase is better showed when used small loads. So it can be concluded that the cryogenic treatment showed efficacy on the mechanical properties of M2 steel.
