EVALUATION OF THE THERMAL PROFILE IN A CANINE KNEE JOINT BY THE VARIATION OF BLOOD PERFUSION VALUES

Resumo
Simulate numerically to find the temperature field in the canine knee joint in thermal neutrality condition and evaluate the influence of different blood perfusion values found in the literature. The geometric model of the canine knee joint was created based on a photographic record of a cross section of an anatomical part. The heat diffusion equation was used to model the heat transfer phenomenon. The numerical simulations were performed using different blood perfusion values found in the literature and the average of these values. Thus, nine numerical simulations were performed using the ANSYS program-CFX® 12.1. The simulation results were compared with experimental in vivo data in the literature. The blood perfusion values found in the literature were more contrasting in adipose tissue and bone. The average and four combinations of blood perfusion values presented lower or equal difference to 10% compared to the experimental in vivo data. It can be concluded that the mathematical models are important tools for estimation of tissue temperature. However, a major problem in the mathematical modeling is the determination of physiological parameters, especially blood perfusion. Knowing the influence of the variation of this property is essential to study the heat transfer in living tissue.
