EMISSIONS ANALYSIS FROM S.I. ENGINE FUELED WITH NATURAL GAS, GASOLINE AND ETHANOL

Resumo
Brazil has a important fleet of Flex vehicles, and more than 90% of vehicles produced in 2014 have engines with flex-fuel technology. Thereby, the evaluation and estimation of Green House Gas (GHG) emissions becomes important. This paper develops a comparative study of emissions from a 2.0 flex fuel engine fueled with natural gas, gasoline E25 and hydrous ethanol. Low- and high speed conditions were defined in order to assess emissions in heavy and free traffic situations respectively. The results showed that in low speed conditions, gasoline E25 and natural gas had very low emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), meanwhile, ethanol showed no emission. Carbon dioxide (CO2) emission was the same for both gasoline E25 and ethanol, however, the natural gas had the lowest emission. The higher emission of hydrocarbons (HC) was natural gas followed by gasoline E25 and ethanol. In high-speed conditions, all fuels have zero CO emission. CO2 emissions increased slightly, with the gasoline E25 and ethanol showed the same value, and natural gas have the lowest. HC emissions decreased by approximately 50%, with the highest emission derived from natural gas. From the results, it can be see that natural gas is the fuel with the greatest impact on GHG emissions has the highest emission of HC in both conditions of high and low speed.
