High Impact Polysterene (HIPS) Elastic Modulus Determination in Stretch Degree Function by Vacuum Forming

Resumo

High-Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) have been used in several industry application due to impact-resistant properties, versatility and economic factors, otherwise mechanical properties after vacuum forming process are not fully known. This paper presents correlation between High Impact Polystyrene mechanical properties after manufacturing process and stretch degrees. Elastic modulus was analyzed in two direction through tensile test in ASTM D638-10 specimens obtained by cutting refrigerator intern box who presented different stretch degree, determined by a grid measurement before and after manufacturing process. Difference between Elastic Modulus in two orthogonal direction was analyzed obtaining about 25% of value difference to the most stretched regions, presenting 1806.12 MPa in most stretched region and 1337.71 MPa in the orthogonal direction. Elastic Modulus major difference in same stretch direction obtained was about 9% corresponding to 4.5 stretch degree factor in comparison to non-stretched specimen in same direction, presenting 1806.12 MPa in most stretched region and 1632.86 MPa in lowest stretch degree region, which led to conclusion that most stretched specimens presents major Elastic Modulus. Also, it was observed that low stretch degree specimens present minor difference between Elastic Modulus in two analyzed direction.
