GENERATION OF ELECTRICITY FOR ISOLATED COMMUNITIES USING RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES IN THE CUBAN CONTEXT

Resumo

In this paper is performed the technical and economical analysis of the cogeneration plant associated with biomass gasification system, designed to operate associated to an internal combustion engine, in order to generate electricity and hot water in isolated areas. In the proposed technology the heat of the exhaust gases from the engine is recovery to hot water production (cogeneration); this fact would allow that this configuration of the system be more attractive than conventional systems, normally based for the only production of mechanical or electrical power. A modified downdraft fixed bed gasifier is used to supply syngas for the cogeneration system, using a ZIL -130 engine (Russian Engine). The used of the biomass obtained in neighboring areas of the place of system installation is proposed. Applying the First Law of Thermodynamics to the gasifier-cogeneration system was calculated the main flows of energy (electricity and hot water). Also is determinate the costs for the production of syngas and electricity obtained were 0.139 USD/kWh and 0.017 USD/kWh, respectively, with a payback period of 10 years and an annual interest rate of 7%. The mass and energy balances shown a thermal and electric efficiencies of 32,4% and 23,4% respectively, indicating an overall efficiency of 55,8% for the cogeneration system.
