CFD ANALYSIS OF THE CO-FIRING PROCESS OF COAL AND WOODY BIOMASS IN A REAL BOILER OF 160 MW POWER PLANT

Resumo

This paper presents a computational numerical investigation of the pulverized coal combustion process in mixture with woody biomass in the real steam generator of the 160 MW Thermal Power Plant, located in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The commercial software Ansys CFX Europe Ltda. version 15 was used in the simulations. The main objective was to determinate what would be the most appropriate proportion of biomass and coal in the mix for the combustion process. Was performed to evaluate the results generated by the simulation in comparison with those obtained with the pure coal burning aim to verify the possibility of replacing the current firing process by this new one, and determined how much will be the reduction of pollutants, without losing efficiency of boiler. The experimental data of the plant and operation conditions used in this study were obtained from literature. In the implementation of the model for the combustion of biomass in coal mixtures with Ansys CFX has been considered for this evaluation the proportions of 1.74%, 3.61% and 5.62% of biomass in the mixture. The best result obtained was the case where retired 5% of coal getting a reduction in emissions, without a significant loss of the boiler efficiency.
