Description and Application of the Scramjet Engine Simulation Pack (SJETSP)

Resumo

A numerical model was developed for preliminary analysis of 2D scramjet engines. The advantage of the SJETSP is that it is capable of estimating a multitude of scramjet performance parameters with a short computational time. To achieve this, the inlet was modeled with the oblique shockwave relationships. The isolator, combustor and nozzle were treated using a quasi-one-dimensional, viscous and reacting flow model. The viscous effects were taken into account estimating the skin friction coefficient and the heat flux through the walls. A hydrogen-air combustion mechanism was also included along with a mixing model. Experiments were used to validate the numerical code and overall good agreement was achieved. Following, as a primary application, a baseline scramjet configuration was used to investigate how selected flow properties vary with different prescribed trajectories and fuel injection strategies. These studies revealed that the combustor flow properties are highly sensitive to changes in freestream properties and fuel-air equivalence ratio. Also, based on the results, general directions for the combustor design were made.
