Resumo
This paper details preliminary results of the numerical modeling of the elastic curve (Euler's elastica) and three elementary bending-active structures using the Finite Element Modeling (FEM) software Ansys®. Modeled structures include variations on a single beam, a simple gridshell, and an umbrella. Results suggest bending-active structures exhibit distinct structural properties when compared to similar curves, and the choice of element type substantially affects the results of the model. Ongoing research will explore further numerical and physical modeling of more complex bending-active structures and is part of an ongoing study to further the understanding of numerical modeling in the structural design of bending-active structures.
