Resumo

With the evolution of the civil construction industry, it is increasingly common the use of cranes in works of different sizes, in order to accelerate the processes, allowing to attend work's financial- physical schedule, each day leaner. Nevertheless, with the usage of cranes, it is possible to verify the occurrence of accidents due to the tilting of them, often generating tragedies. There are several reasons to cranes' tilting. In this article will be evaluated one of them: the differential settlement between crane pads, which in the case of assuming considerable values, contribute to the occurrence of angular distortion above the desirable and allowed for proper use of the equipment. The studied case is the Thermoelectric Plant Mauá 3, in Amazonas, Brazil. Prediction results will be presented for absolute settlement of two crane pads used during the construction of the Plant. Absolute settlement were estimated based on analytical methods of Barata (1984) and Schmertmann et al. (1977) and were compared to the results obtained by numerical method, using Plaxis 2D, a Finite Element Analysis software. Based on these results, were also verified the angular distortions obtained according to the different criteria. It was assessed whether the cranes met the required specification, and it was possible to determine if there would be safety in the use of the cranes in the place intended for installation, according to the region's soil characteristics.
