Accuracy of offshore riser-guards collision models​ using beam or shell elements

Resumo

In order to protect offshore risers against some kind of impact, a structure made of steel tubes, namely riser-guard, is installed on the platforms. These structures are designed to absorb a typical supply collision energy avoiding, by this way, an environmental disaster due to oil spill. Generally, riser-guards are designed using finite element model with beam or shell elements. Beam elements require less computational cost than shell elements, but with some geometrical conditions, local problems can happen and then shell elements are necessary to use. In this work a parametric study is realized to verify the limit that beam and shell elements have the same accuracy varying riser-guard characteristics for typical collision model.
