Resumo
The quest for increasing the efficiency of propulsion units has become even larger as technology advances and environmental legislation become more demanding. More and more, the use of a turbocharger becomes indispensable in new engines. Thus, the possibility to couple an electric motor to the turbocharger to recover part of the energy contained in the exhaust gases is becoming very attractive, as demonstrated by several studies and by the current application in the Formula 1 championship. This study presents a theoretical review of electric turbo compound applications and its benefits and also the development of a virtual model of a mid-size (6,7 liter) Diesel engine. The focus is its validation together with the original base engine in order to use it as platform for a future electric turbo compound development. The set was developed through the Gamma Technologies's platform GT SUITE, which is a one dimensional (1D) engine code.
