Resumo

The present work has two main objectives: in the first part, classical governing equations for the lateral movement of a railway vehicle, developed by Carter in 1916, are introduced; its main hypotheses are discussed. In addition, the first method of Lyapunov is applied to determine the critical speed of a typical wheelset. Then, in the second part of the work, a rigid body model together with a contact formulation is employed to solve the same problem, namely "Master-Surface to Master-Surface Contact Formulation". Preliminary models are developed employing this new contact formulation and using simplified geometries. These models are intended to reproduce the so-called "hunting phenomenon", in a fully nonlinear environment. Although several further developments are required, the results are very promising.
