Non-Characteristic Harmonics Produced by HVDC Systems Under Voltage Sag Conditions

Resumo
Although the recognition that the issues associated with the generation and compensation of harmonics is a widespread subject in the context of the HVDC technology, anomalous situations may be found at operating such installations. In fact, under ideal operating conditions, the HVDC arrangements produce the so-called characteristic harmonics, whereas under non-ideal conditions harmonic components of different orders and magnitudes are often generated. These are generally called by non-characteristic harmonics and their occurrence can be harmful to devices and the overall installation. These non-ideal conditions may occur as steady state, dynamic and transient phenomena. Within this context, this work is focused on the relationship between the short duration voltage variations and the behaviour of the converters stations at producing characteristics and non-characteristics harmonic current components. To highlight the phenomenon herein considered computational studies are carried out using a Brazilian commercial HVDC installation which has been implemented in the MATLAB-SIMULINK platform. Computational investigations are then performed with the scheme operating with normal conditions followed by a short time disturbance produced by a single-phase voltage variation.
